Eleuthero is a plant that has been traditionally used as an immune system booster and a general stimulant. There is evidence that eleuthero was first used as an herbal remedy in China some 2,000 years ago. The plant is mostly used in traditional medicines as an adaptogen, a compound that helps the body better handle and adapt to stress. Eleuthero also acts as a stimulant, increasing nervous system function.
Siberian ginseng is often called an “adaptogen.” This is a non-medical term used to describe substances that can supposedly strengthen the body and increase general resistance to daily stress. In addition to being used as an adaptogen, Siberian ginseng is used for conditions of low blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, atherosclerosis, and rheumatic heart disease. Siberian Ginseng is used for kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic tuberculosis. It is also used for treating the side effects of cancer chemotherapy. Some people use Siberian ginseng to improve athletic performance and the ability to do work. Used for insomnia (Sleeping disorders) as well. They also use it to treat problems and the symptoms of infections caused by herpes simplex type-2. It is also used to boost the immune system, prevent colds, and increase appetite.
Benefits
For Thyroid - Siberian ginseng (eleuthero), an adaptogen supports thyroid health. It is a wonder herb for people suffering from hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Siberian ginseng is believed to be effective in treating hypothyroidism by regulating hormone levels. This potent herb contains substances that assist the normal functioning of the thymus and adrenal glands.
Bipolar disorder - Taking Siberian ginseng by mouth for 6 weeks appears to induce a similar response rate and remission rate as taking lithium plus fluoxetine in people with bipolar disorder.
A viral infection called herpes simplex 2 (HSV-2). Taking Siberian ginseng extract, seems to reduce the number, severity, and duration of herpes simplex type 2 infections.
Side effects: Siberian ginseng, or Eleuthero, is contraindicated in children under 12, pregnant and breastfeeding women and for anyone who has uncontrollable high blood pressure. Unlike Korean ginseng, Siberian ginseng appears to increase blood pressure for those with low blood pressure and decrease blood pressure for those with high blood pressure however we tend to be cautious and never recommend it for those who are struggling to keep their blood pressure within normal limits. Since Siberian ginseng has an impact on the immune system, it should not be used by anyone suffering from an autoimmune disease such as Crohn’s and rheumatoid arthritis.
