Gurmar is a woody climbing shrub native to India and Africa. The leaves are used to make medicine. Gymnema or gurmar has a long history of use in India's Ayurvedic medicine. The Hindi name for Gymnema means "destroyer of sugar or madhunashini."

Gurmar has been used in India for centuries to control blood sugar.

Why does sugared coffee taste bitter if we have it after eating chocolate? Why does tea taste funny immediately after eating sweets? Why does orange juice taste bitter after eating a cookie? You must have come across such questions. The answer lies in taste senses and our nervous system. Various tastes stimulate various parts our brain. Often when we eat something sweet, we feel like eating more. And it is difficult for us to control if we are strictly on a weight loss diet. What if we were not able to taste sweet? The exciting right would definitely stop our cravings for sweet food. Gymnema Sylvestre or Gurmar is one such great herb which kills the taste of sugar!

After eating gurmar, a banana can taste like a bland, overcooked vegetable. This is due to the presence of compounds, known as gymnemic acids, which bind to taste receptors on the tongue.  This effect has been known for centuries – the Hindi name gurmar translates as “destroyer of sugar.” Studies have also found these gymnemic acids exhibit anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory activities.

Gymnema contains substances that decrease the absorption of sugar from the intestine. Gymnema may also increase the amount of insulin in the body and increase the growth of cells in the pancreas, which is the place in the body where insulin is made.

Some of the health benefits of gymnema include its use for treatment of type 2 diabetes, treatment of diabetes mellitus, regulation of blood sugar, stimulation of insulin secretion, its use as antimicrobial, antiviral, natural food for obesity, reduction of cholesterol, anti-inflammatory property, treating gastrointestinal problems, skin problems and other benefits.

Patients with diabetes were able to decrease their dose of prescription diabetes medication due to a reduction in blood sugar. Five of the patients were able to discontinue use of conventional diabetic medicine entirely and maintain their healthy blood glucose levels.
